Award-winning Western Australian singer-songwriter Finn Pearson continues to lean further into an alt-country rock territory, while retaining the emotional honesty that has become his signature, with his upcoming single Tunnel Lights - out 15 May.
Over the past 12–24 months, Finn Pearson has steadily built momentum as one of WA’s most exciting emerging artists. A mainstay across the state’s premier festivals, including Wave Rock Weekender, Blues at Bridgetown, Nannup Music Festival, and Playmakers, he has also toured extensively through regional WA and supported the likes of Kingswood, The Audreys, The Southern River Band, Playlunch, William Crighton and Nathan Cavaleri. His recent run of singles has marked a confident shift toward a country-tinged rock sound, earning Triple J airplay, media attention, editorial playlist support, and recognition through multiple WA Country Music and WAM Award nominations.
Driven by a dreamy yet grounded sonic palette, Tunnel Lights blends atmospheric slide guitar with a grittier instrumental backbone. A pairing that mirrors the emotional weight at the heart of the song. The result is a track that feels both intimate and expansive, capturing a sense of quiet unraveling before swelling into something more cathartic.
“Lyrically, Tunnel Lights is a real deep cut for me. It's taken a few years for it to grow and develop. It captures the realisation that a relationship is disintegrating, followed by the post-breakup chaos and the loneliness associated with being suddenly cut loose from the connection with someone.”
Produced alongside longtime collaborator Oli Bodlovich, the recording process allowed space for both restraint and depth, with a clear focus on letting the song’s vulnerability lead.
“Production-wise, it came together easily. Oli and I leant into a dreamy slide-guitar feel which was underwritten by a grittier guitar bed track than usual. The tricky part was producing an instrumental bed with enough emotional character to back up the vulnerability of the lyrics, but I'm really pleased with how it turned out. The band played beautifully on the recording, and I'm eternally grateful to be surrounded by such fantastic musicians.”
Mixed by Oli and mastered by James Newhouse, Tunnel Lights showcases a refined and confident step forward for Pearson, balancing sonic growth with the raw storytelling that continues to resonate with audiences.
